  • Security breach during Ranji Trophy game at Airforce ground

first_img(Eds: Adding Delhi skipper Ishant Sharmas reaction)New Delhi, Nov 3 (PTI) A man today drove his car onto the pitch during the Ranji Trophy match between Delhi and Uttar Pradesh at the Airforce ground in Palam, a major security breach which left both the players and officials dumbfounded.International players like Gautam Gambhir, Ishant Sharma and Rishabh Pant were present on the ground when the incident took place and it could have snowballed into something even more serious amounting to physical danger.A picture has emerged of the incident where Gambhir, Ishant and Manan Sharma were seen standing with the car parked on the centre of the 22-yard strip.Ishant sarcastically tweeted:”Drive in theater just progressed to #DriveIN match. Shocking scene in between #RanjiTrophy match today witnessed with @GautamGambhir.”The BCCI will be seeking a report from their affiliated unit Services Sports Control Board (SSCB) about the incident. At around 4:40 pm, 20 minutes from close of play, a silver grey Wagon R suddenly drove onto the field of play with Uttar Pradesh batting in their second innings. The man, who identified himself as Girish Sharma, tried to swerve his car twice on the 22-yard strip before he was stopped. It was learnt that the main gate of the Airforce ground, which only allows entry of cars after proper checking remained open with the security not in his position. This allowed the man free access inside the complex and instead moving towards the designated parking lot, which is behind the main pavilion. He took a detour entering from the Palam B complex into the field of play and took couple of rounds of the pitch before trying to leave the ground.advertisementThe security personnel at the ground swung into action after this and closed the gate in order to stop the man from fleeing. He was stopped at the gate.He was then detained for questioning by the Delhi Police.BCCI acting president CK Khanna told PTI: “The BCCI will enquire into the incident. The relevant department will get in touch with the Services Sports Control Board as this is a matter of serious concern.”This is a breach of security measure at the Services Sports Control Board (SSCB) ground. Imagine if the man had any sinister motive, then lives of international cricketers could have been in danger,” Khanna added.Delhi team manager Shankar Saini, who was present at the ground said: “Thank God, nothing untoward happened. There was a possibility that it could have been more serious.”The allegedly inebriated man was first detained by the Airforce Police before being handed over to the Delhi Police for interrogation. However, as per senior Delhi Police official, none of the involved parties lodged a formal complaint against the intruder.”No formal complaint has been lodged. Preliminary investigations suggest that the Airforce security guard was not present at the gate. We have detained the man identified as Girish for questioning. He is around 30 years old and claimed that he works in a private firm. He seemed mentally disturbed,” a senior Delhi Police official told PTI.A DDCA official present at the ground said: “The man looked a complete mess. He was driving the car wearing a lungi. In fact, when he was being bashed up for his act, he hardly reacted. He did not look in perfect mental health.”Although the match is being held at the Services home ground, the host of this particular match is Delhi & Districts Cricket Association (DDCA). The Services is only the facilitator as they are providing the ground for the game. The match was supposed to be held at Feroz Shah Kotla but with Indias T20 game against New Zealand being held on November 1, the match was shifted to the Airforce ground. • US China extend talks on trade battle for 3rd day

first_imgBEIJING — U.S. and Chinese envoys extended trade talks into a third day Wednesday, as President Donald Trump said negotiations aimed at ending a tariff war were “going very well!”The two governments have announced no details, but Asian stock markets rose on news the negotiations that originally were planned for two days were extended. The two sides are meeting face-to-face for the first time since Trump and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping agreed on Dec. 1 to suspend further punitive action against each other’s imports for 90 days while they negotiate over the fight sparked by American complaints Beijing steals or pressures companies to hand over technology.“Talks with China are going very well!” Trump said late Tuesday on Twitter.Washington is pressing Beijing for changes including rolling back plans for government-led creation of Chinese global champions in robotics and other fields. Europe, Japan and other trading partners echo Washington’s complaints that those violate Beijing’s market-opening obligations.Chinese officials have suggested Beijing might alter its industrial plans but they have rejected pressure to abandon their blueprint for greater prosperity and global influence. They have tried to defuse pressure for more sweeping change by offering concessions including purchasing more American soybeans, natural gas and other exports. An official Chinese newspaper warned Washington not to demand too much.China is strong and has its own needs, said the Global Times, published by the ruling Communist Party. Washington “cannot push China too far” and must avoid a situation that “spins out of control.”Joe McDonald, The Associated Presslast_img read more

  • Delhi Bar Council orders big 4 audit firms to refrain from practicing

first_imgNew Delhi, MDelhi Bar Council orders big 4 audit firms to refrain from practicing lawThe Bar Council of Delhi, in an interim order on Friday, directed four big accounting firms — E&Y, Deloitte India, Price Water House Cooper’s and KPMG — to refrain from practicing law until further orders from the lawyers’ body. The Bar Council has also asked these firms for a list of all advocates enrolled across all their offices, in any capacity. The Bar Council action came on a complaint by senior advocate Lalit Bhasin alleging that though all these firms were accounting firms originally, they were engaged in law practice, which was not legally permissible. Also Read – Odd-Even: CM seeks transport dept’s views on exemption to women, two wheelers, CNG vehicles Bhasin, who is also the President of the Society of India Law Firms, said that the accounting firms have been encroaching into legal practice and their practice of hiring law graduates to provide non-litigation legal solutions was in contrast with the Advocates Act. While Chartered Accountants are governed by the Chartered Accountants Act, legal practice is governed by the Advocates Act. “The Council is of the view that in the meantime, all the firms… refrain themselves from indulging in any such practice until further orders,” said a statement from the Delhi Bar Council. As per media reports, in November 2018, an expert panel constituted by the Ministry of Corporate Affairs suggested amendment to the Advocates Act to allow audit firms to offer legal services. The Bar Council of Delhi will hear the matter next on July 12.last_img read more

first_imgIslamabad: Over 20 Chinese have been arrested from various Pakistani cities during an ongoing crackdown for their alleged involvement in arranging illegal marriages of young Pakistani girls to Chinese nationals and forcing them into prostitution, officials said Wednesday. The crackdown was launched this week after media reports said that several Pakistani girls were subjected to sexual exploitation by Chinese husbands after going to China. The officials said that over 20 Chinese have been arrested from various Pakistani cities for their involvement in arranging fake marriages of Pakistani women and removing their organs and forcing them into prostitution. These centres produce fake documents of Chinese men showing them either as Christians or Muslims. Most of the girls reportedly became victims of human trafficking and were forced into prostitution, the report said.last_img read more

  • Mens Hockey Topseeded Ohio State falls handedly in Big Ten tournament semifinal

Junior goalkeeper Tommy Nappier (37) looks down the ice in the second period of game one during Ohio State’s hockey game vs. Michigan State on March 1. Ohio State won 5-1. Credit: Nick Hudak | For The LanternOhio State knew it was Penn State’s offense that it had to worry about coming in.The Nittany Lions averaged an NCAA-leading 4.59 goals per game, while their 3.65 goals against per game was fourth-worst in the country. But on Sunday, it was both the defense and the offense that gave the Buckeyes troubles, falling to Penn State 5-1, eliminating Ohio State from the Big Ten tournament. The loss is Ohio State’s fifth in its past seven games.“I’m nothing but disappointed right now,” head coach Steve Rohlik said. “We got a good hockey team in that locker room, we’ve played some really good hockey this year, we certainly weren’t at our best tonight.”The Nittany Lions outshot the Buckeyes 36-32, putting four past sophomore goalie Tommy Nappier, who came in with the No. 2 save percentage in the country. The second period was where the game was ultimately decided. With 2:24 to go in the period, junior forward Tanner Laczynski put the Buckeyes back within one with 2:24 remaining. But the goal was reviewed and overturned due to an offsides call, keeping Penn State up three heading into the third period.“It was a big time goal at the end of the period,” senior forward Mason Jobst said. “We would’ve had a little bit of energy going into the third, but it’s part of the game, and that’s just the way it goes.”The three-goal lead ended up being more than enough for the Nittany Lions to move forward to face Notre Dame in the Big Ten championship game.Already down two from the opening period, Ohio State senior defenseman Sasha Larocque was given a major penalty and game misconduct for a hit to the head of sophomore Adam Pilewicz. On the ensuing Penn State power play, which ranked No. 3 in the NCAA coming in, junior defenseman Kris Myllari found junior forward Brandon Biro on the back post of the Ohio State goal for an easy tap in with 10 seconds remaining on the man advantage, giving the Nittany Lions a 3-0 lead.“That was a big blow to lose our captain,” Jobst said. “If we could have just got that last little bit killed off, it would have gave us a little boost of energy when you kill a five-[minute penalty] like that, and that was pretty disappointing.”The third period started with more of the same for Penn State. Junior forward Nate Sucese slipped a puck passed Nappier’s five-hole to extend the lead to 4-0. Senior forward John Wiitala scored with less than five minutes remaining in the final period to cut the lead back to within three, but it was not enough to mount the comeback.Sucese also scored an empty-net goal with 46.8 seconds remaining to make the score 5-1.Nappier finished the game with 31 saves, allowing the tied-most goals against this season, most recently allowing four, again, to Penn State on Jan. 19. Junior goalie Peyton Jones made 31 saves in the game for the Nittany Lions. The scoring was opened up by Penn State junior forward Liam Folkes, who was the hero for the Nittany Lions in their previous series against Wisconsin. After scoring nine points and earning NCAA Second Star of the Week against the Badgers, Folkes scored the opener on a wide-open move in the middle, giving Nappier no chance to make a play.It appeared that Penn State would hold a 1-0 lead heading into the first intermission, but with less than a second to go in the period, sophomore forward Alex Limoges narrowly beat Nappier to the left side, with the puck trickling past the sophomore goalie to give the Nittany Lions a 2-0 lead early.“I think we had a good start, and I think once they scored the first goal, I think we had a disappointing end of the first period,” Rohlik said. “That’s a good hockey team there that’s gonna capitalize, and they did.”Ohio State will now wait to see if it will earn an at-large bid for the NCAA tournament. read more
