HBU, Abilene Christian Earn Final Women’s Outdoor Weekly Honors

Women’s Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week – Kierstin Santana, Houston Baptist – Sr. – Baytown, TexasAt the LSU Invitational, Santana broke the HBU record in the 800m by more than second and ran the second-fastest time in the Southland this season. She finished fourth among collegians behind a trio from Texas A&M while running the fastest 800 in the league on the weekend. FRISCO, Texas – Houston Baptist senior Kierstin Santana and Abilene Christian junior Kayla Melgar are the Southland Conference Women’s Outdoor Athletes of the Week, the league announced Tuesday. Southland Athletes of the Week are presented by UniversalCoin.com.This is Santana’s second weekly outdoor track award of the season, having earned the honor on April 10. Women’s Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week – Kayla Melgar, Abilene Christian – Jr. – Tempe, Ariz.Melgar posted a new personal best in the hammer throw with a mark of 183-11.25 at the ACU Oliver Jackson Twilight. That mark moves her into fourth in the Southland. The junior also finished first in shot put (48-05.25) and second in discus (176-03.00). The junior ranks top four in all three of these events in the conference. Honorable Mention: Cori Runnels, Northwestern State. All Southland teams now turn their sights to the 2018 Southland Outdoor Championships, beginning Friday in San Antonio, Texas, hosted by UIW. Southland weekly award winners are nominated and voted upon by each school’s sports information director. Voting for one’s own athlete is not permitted. To earn honorable mention, a student-athlete must appear on at least 25 percent of ballots.last_img
